Forking
« Back to Glossary Index
Forking in the context of cryptocurrency refers to the divergence of a blockchain into two separate paths, resulting in the creation of two distinct versions of the blockchain and, consequently, two separate cryptocurrencies. This phenomenon occurs when there is a fundamental disagreement among participants in a blockchain network, often triggered by differences in protocol rules, software upgrades, or ideological visions for the cryptocurrency.
